Following last year’s successful Essex Read, which encouraged people across the county to read Sarah Perry’s The Essex Serpent, we are delighted to welcome fellow ‘Essex Girl’ author Syd Moore to be this year’s Writer-in-Residence, and her new book Strange Sight as The Essex Read 2018.
Anyone who knows anything about best-selling novelist, former TV presenter and activist Syd Moore, will know just how passionate she is about the county of her birth. A passion matched only by her enthusiasm for the subject of her compelling trilogy: Strange Sight, Strange Magic and Strange Fascination – the Essex witch trials. Syd will be participating in various events, debates and workshops across the county throughout March, and hosting the Festival’s inaugural Pop-Up Writer’s House in partnership with METAL at Chalkwell Hall in Southend.
“Strange Magic is a book which sets out unashamedly to entertain, and does so with wit, style and erudition. I gleefully submitted to a tale of witchcraft, feminism, mysterious strangers, historical atrocities, plucky heriones and ghastly apparitions” Sarah Perry, Essex Book Festival Patron and last year’s Writer-in-Residence.
