Edmund Crispin wrote nine detective novels and two collections of short stories. Under his real name of Bruce Montgomery, he was a highly successful composer of both concert and film music. On the 40th anniversary of his death, his biographer David Whittle looks at Montgomery’s life and the various worlds he inhabited.

One of the undiscovered treasures of British crime fiction: Crispin’s storytelling is intelligent, humane, surprising and rattling good fun” AL Kennedy
