Dr Janet Dyson will provide an introduction to the group of artists who gathered in the Essex village of Great Bardfield from the 1930s onwards.
Janet is a local historian and her book looks at the social history aspect of the ‘Bardfield Artists’, drawing on the voices and memories of Great Bardfield residents in recalling life in the village before and after the arrival of two young artists in the 1930s. Their fascination for rural north Essex encouraged other artists to settle in Great Bardfield, which resulted in the extraordinary outpouring of creativity seen during the Open House exhibitions of the 1950s.
