About the Artists

Philip Terry is the Director of the Centre of Creative Writing at Essex University. His book Dante’s Inferno (Carcanet, 2014), which relocates Dante’s poem to current day Essex, was an Independent Poetry Title of the Year and a TLS Book of the Year.

Blackwaterside is an ongoing project that originated from a commission for a Survey East photo film by Caught by the River for screening at Fulham Palace in 2016. The project was developed further in 2018 as an audio-print production featuring the music of Ultramarine, photography from Ian Cooper’s Survey East project, artwork by Bronwen Sleigh and the poetry of Philip Terry. The project will evolve further in 2020 with new recordings.

Ultramarine are the London/Essex-based electronic duo of Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond. Formed in 1989, they released their debut album Folk in 1990 on seminal Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule.

The duo’s second long player Every Man and Woman is a Star (Rough Trade, 1992) is widely considered an underground classic and was neatly described by music writer Simon Reynolds in his book Energy Flash as:

“Perhaps the first and best stab at that seeming contradiction-in-terms, pastoral techno… all sun-ripened, meandering lassitude and undulant dub-sway tempos… like acid-house suffused with the folky-jazzy ambience of the Canterbury scene.”

The group’s collaborative work has included songwriting and recording partnerships with Robert Wyatt and Anna Domino, recordings with Kevin Ayers and David McAlmont, plus numerous live and studio sessions with members of the London jazz scene, including Lol Coxhill, Iain Ballamy, Elton Dean, Dave Green and Jimmy Hastings.

Every Man and Woman is a Star was followed by the albums United Kingdoms (1993), which features an extensive collaboration with Robert Wyatt, Bel Air (1995) and A User’s Guide (1998). After a long sabbatical, Ultramarine re-emerged with This Time Last Year (2013) and their critically acclaimed seventh album Signals Into Space (2019).
