The unusually long coastline of Essex makes it especially vulnerable to flooding. Writer and social historian Ken Worpole – who lived on Canvey Island as a child and has written extensively about the 1953 floods – will be in conversation with Hana Loftus, co-director of award-winning architecture practice HAT Projects. Hana has been working since 2018 in Jaywick Sands (where 35 died in 1953) to explore how it could cope with future flood conditions, working with Tendring District Council, the Environment Agency, Essex County Council and local groups.
The talk will be illustrated with archive and contemporary photographs, and material showing possible scenarios for Jaywick Sands, opening out to a discussion of the wider issues raised for the Essex coast as a result of climate change.
